Compassionate Care for Challenging Psychedelic Experiences

with Sara Gael, Director of Harm Reduction for the MAPS Zendo Project and Ryan Beauregard, Manager of the Zendo Project (CE Credit )

Community Commons Rooms 150/160

This year, millions of people will use psychedelics in recreational environments, many of them for the first time. Difficult psychedelic experiences can be frightening, but also potentially among the most valuable experiences someone can have. What can you do to help someone having a difficult psychedelic experience? What techniques are available for helping transform a potentially traumatic situation into a positive or even therapeutic one? What role has MAPS and the Zendo Project played at festivals, and what take-home messages are available for others interested in psychedelic harm reduction?

Topics include: physical, mental, and emotional effects of psychedelics; factors that contribute to a difficult experience; Zendo Project’s four principles of psychedelic support; tools, techniques, and protocols; sitter self-care; assisting the integration of a psychedelic journey; ethical guidelines for psychedelic peer counseling.

About the Zendo Project:
The mission of the Zendo Project is to provide a supportive environment and education to help transform difficult psychedelic and psychological experiences into opportunities for learning and growth. We envision a world where communities are engaged in providing safety and support for people having psychedelic and psychological challenges; and harm reduction principles are used foremost to reduce the risks associated with substance use.

Trauma, the Body & Psychedelic Medicine

with Saj Razvi, Director of Education at Innate Path (CE/CME Credit)

Academic Building Rooms 7/8

Join us for this workshop exploring a revolution taking place in the world of mental health: the emergence of psychedelic psychotherapy. In contrast to our current health paradigm which is biochemically focused and aims for symptom suppression/management, psychedelic psychotherapy addresses the whole person and has already demonstrated symptom resolution.

In this workshop you will learn about how the autonomic nervous system and non-ordinary states of consciousness are influenced by trauma as well as how our innate healing tendencies can be powerfully amplified by psychedelic medicines. You will get the opportunity to watch videos of live psychedelic psychotherapy sessions and see how this type of therapy allows people to engage more deeply, feel more fully, and integrate past wounds.

Discover how psychedelic psychotherapy can give us access to our core subconscious programming and lead to healthy, integrated egoic states as well as transpersonal experiences.

About Innate Path:

Innate Path is a psychedelic assisted therapy organization with two main areas of focus: clinical work with psychedelic assisted psychotherapy and a cutting-edge training program for therapists in psychedelic assisted psychotherapy.

Dreamshadow Transpersonal Breathwork Workshop

with Joe Moore and Kyle Buller of Psychedelics Today

Community Commons – Yoga room (2nd floor)

A modern practice for self-discovery, development, and exploration based on the work of Dr. Stanislav Grof and Christina Grof. It combines accelerated breathing, music, bodywork, expressive drawing, and group process in a safe and supportive environment. These elements combined with effort on the participant’s part allow engagement in an adventure of self-discovery accompanied by meaningful experiences both before, during and after the breathwork session itself.

Note: this workshop involves active participation, and all participants should be in good physical health (Breath Workshop – Safety Info).

Update: this workshop is now full.

Music and Dance as a Spiritual Way of Life

Arawenrate Wakeniato (Lawrence Laughing) Akwesasni Mohawk (Keeper of the Faith)

In this workshop, you will learn songs from award-winning Native American arist Lawrence Laughing (Ahrawenrateh) and have the opportunity to participate in a round dance. The round dance begins by acknowledging our own grief, recognizing that we all carry grief, then moving through it to allow it to return to the circle of life. All are welcome.

Arawenrate Wakeniato (Lawrence Laughing) Akwesasni Mohawk (Keeper of the Faith) is among a new generation of Native American singers that is bringing its traditional music and culture into a more contemporary setting. With his deeply resonant voice, Lawrence Laughing (Mohawk) turns his music into heartfelt prayers that honor all of human life. In the Mohawk language, the title of this recording is ‘Onen enska ne-io-kwa-ni-kon-ra’ and is a traditional phrase used to acknowledge a prayer. Accompanied by a unique collection of ethnic acoustic instruments (Native flute, bowed zither, guitars, cittern, oud, bass, hoop drum, resonating stones and more), Laughing expresses compassion for our struggles, respect for courage, and gratitude for love.
